There are multiple places online that will either pay you for;

a) Visits

b) Adsense
Adsense is Google allowing you to put google ads on your page that are relevant to your site. When a visitor finds the information in the add relevant to what they are looking for and click on it, you get paid... This is similar to pay per click advertising sites that you will find.

c) Referals
Referals or leads are places that will pay you when you get someone to regester or buy a product that someone else is trying to sell.

To get your site visited could be considered the most important step if you want to make money from your site. Ideally you would like a site that has content that will keep people coming back to it.

Step 4 - Improve your Site

Optimise your site so that it appears in the top entries when searched on.

Search engines basically use crawlers that look through your site and analyse its content, so what you want is a site that crawlers think is good.

http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ is a site that shows you the estimated daily searched words so that you get an idea if you have a keyword that no one ever searches for then it is unlikely that your site will be viewed. On the other hand keywords that are highly searched for may be already occupied by highly ranked websites already, and difficult to out rank them.
